I used to follow Laurens Hof’s ATmosphere report religiously. I loved that it included a broad spectrum of topics like significant app releases, protocol work, institutional developments, community movements and government involvement. But it seems he has moved on to other things and I haven’t been able to find good sources for general information about happenings in the atmosphere. I get a lot from this forum as well as various people’s blue sky accounts/blogs, but I can tell there’s a lot I’m missing. I would love to see where folks get their up-to-date ATmoNews.
PS not sure if this should be in resources and learning, or just general discussion.
It’s probably a very good time to address this. Its almost impossible to get orientated around what started as a protocol’s development, and now, because that is changing so many aspects of “social” media, (networks, apps, etc) its near impossible to get a complete overview of quite revolutionary changes.
A couple of views from my perspective.
The governance of PDS operators as things move out of the original (USA) tech focus. (I’ll leave it for someone else to outline the latest view of large, and small, PDS operators.
My approach, in any web community, is to follow the conferences. Next year’s Atmosphere conf is just starting to form up, so lots of different new (european) stuff will jump out of that, so you can track the movers and shakers.
Lastly, and this isn’t a suck up. @bmann.ca is THE community man around this discourse tool & other AT traps. I keep trying to find a place where the AT community managers structure their “org chart”; something every newbie needs to get orientated. Well see. (really nice people though)
There is too much to follow! I generally look to boost things with the @atmosphere.community account.
One of the ideas with the atmosphere.community website is that news can get aggregated there. It’s going to need some folks doing active curation at some point.
It’s in flux and should probably have a big “under construction” banner as it moves to supporting spaces and groups.
We got as far as trying to ingest things like an “atproto” or “atmosphere” tag and grouping those automatically. And/or using Skyreader / Standard Reader tools to expose such a grouping.
So yeah, I’ve mostly mentioned some tooling, with perhaps the AC site being a spot where people volunteer to do more with it.
Semble Collections, following key people on Bluesky, this site and finding / following key blogs are really the best options right now IMO.
I created a list of “ATproto tinkerers” which I use like a feed sometimes for the people I don’t want to follow and have in my main feed. There are a few other people who have built atproto feeds as well but I haven’t found them as useful as just following key people.
Blog posts from people using Standard Site blogs is another discovery option at the moment: https://standard-reader.app/ Patrick Singletary and a few other people occasionally do summary blog posts like this where it doesn’t go in depth https://insummary.offprint.app/ and various people write in depth about the things that they are doing / interest them.
Hi! I’ve been curating a collection up-to-date and wide ranging news and discussion about the Atmosphere on Semble for the last year. It’s an open collection too, so other are more than welcome to help out and we’ve had a bunch of contributors in the past. While I used to also curate weekly summaries about this, it ended up taking too much time to do on my own, but it should be straight forward to create your own custom views/summaries over the collection.
@bmann.ca maybe this collection could power news on atmosphere.community?
Hey Chris! Mostly “someone” will have to form a group and decide how to implement it.
Ms Boba has a bunch of plans around Spaces and Groups which gives building blocks.
Curating community news is going to be a big job. I hope some folks step up and take it on. There’s probably related work on how to share community assets like our large mailing list.
And yeah that weekly summary is exactly the thing that’s probably the most valuable.
Weekly summaries could be rotated between people. Writing a summary every week sounds exhausting but once a month doesn’t sound so bad.
Monthly summaries of just the bigger stuff could be a more sustainable option and might be sufficient for most folks. This could also be rotated.
A collaborative document of significant happenings could be helpful. It could even supplant the need for one person to write a summary as we could just post the contents of the dock on leaflet once a week/month.
Disclaimer: I run the feed I’m about to talk about
I created a “The Atmosphere” feed in https://graze.social/ a bit ago that uses weighted personalization to show “movers and shakers” in relevant atmosphere / atproto topics.
yeah i’m making improvement to @proto feed right now actually, it’s been a moment and needs it. i’m also looking into using graze’s summary feature via cocore for it to help tackle this “too much info” problem too.
