Let’s kick off a thread to talk about what Google Gmap export / import use cases look like. I’ll put my own thoughts and use cases in a reply.

I’ve long wanted to get off of Google specifically for bookmarks.

Thanks @gui.do for bringing this up again.

I’ll write a few notes on the bookmarking loop vs the import. I have a long history that I’d love to import so I’ll start there.

Import

Starred, Want to Go, Favourite, Closed, and Custom are roughly the list types. TODO: go look up what Google supports.

Starred is historical and doesn’t support any extra info.

Everything else supports a notes field.

There is also a per category custom tags feature.

I attempted this previously on my own into Facilmap

Google does GeoJSON. I failed to get names and such into this format.

In a target format, I’d like

  • name
  • street address
  • geo coordinates
  • type / category eg “restaurant” (or: make this a tags field?)
  • linking FourSquare / OSM IDs / etc
  • description

I’m fine with fully public bookmarks. There are also “labels” in Gmap that is where I do private stuff, or custom lists.

I might want to make private notes or reviews (or checkins!) but those feel linked to a bookmark, not part of primary.

Description can be used for this as well (the bookmark is in my PDS)

My primary use case for this info would be search / browse, and linking blog posts and images. And do things like link to a bounding box of “Berlin” so others can browse my bookmarks easily.

Beacon Bits DOES have saved venues, which can be put into folders. For me - folders map to lists nicely, but I don’t want to have to “collect” all restaurants into a Restaurants folder so that’s an argument for tags - or auto filter by FSQ / OSM venue data.

I’d want to do a one time import and then do future imports.

I’m not going to go into every day usage. I’d love to see CoMaps have better bookmarking and be able to sync with them. Ultimately Gmap search and using the map is very fast, and something like CoMaps with a native mobile app would be needed to displace my on the go usage.

@montoulieu.dev here’s what I’d like out of a universal (community lexicon?) geo / venue bookmark.

Note: this is not a checkin. I see check-ins linking to venues as you already do.
