Is the GWG just one group?

The GWG is brand new, so I’m going to post a handful of topics to get consensus on what this thing is. I think this right here is one of the first questions this group will have to tackle.

There are two concerns covered by the games work that has been done on atproto to this point, and they could arguably be separated.

The first is games metadata, which is what exists in The Pentaract and is used by many games-adjacent applications today: titles, descriptions, release dates, as well as the social graph around them with reviews, likes, and follows.

The second is games infrastructure, which is everything else that supports development of a game[1]: friends lists, matchmaking, achievements, etc. I’ve previously planned this as part of The Pentaract as well, but it certainly doesn’t have to be that way.

Since I started my projects I’ve seen these as deeply interconnected: a game could give a user a bonus for liking it, and achievements make just as much sense in a trophy showcase website as they do in-game.

So what do we think? Are we just covering one concern with this working group, or are we here for both? If we’re here for both, which is the primary focus of the GWG?

  1. To be clear, this is generic infrastructure. Most games will still need their own sidecar lexicons and systems for bespoke data. ↩︎

I’m strongly in favor of the GWG being expansive and dynamic - these sorts of things are very much interconnected, and having an existing group people can go to in order to figure out both what they can use that already exists and what they could push for that doesn’t yet exist would be a very good approach.
