FOSDEM 2027 planning

We’ve got FOSDEM 2027 announced dates FOSDEM 2027

Anyone want to help organize? Mostly this is applying for a dev room when applications open up, and then scheduling talks within the dev room.

Someone else could also take on doing a social one evening - finding a venue and reserving some space.

I made a high level placeholder event - RSVP if you’re thinking about coming.

@gui.do as I mentioned this is maybe something we can take on helping organize this year.

has atproto/bluesky been present at any of the previous editions?

Also: would this not be something to organize from Bluesky/Atproto itself? Or is “attending/sponsoring/having a booth at other events” also something that the co-op is going to do as official representative of atproto (I guess as org positioned above IETF that could make sense?)

“We” are all atproto. Bluesky may also want to participate as a speaker, sponsor, or otherwise – I think AlexG went this year FOSDEM 2026.

There has been community presence by Dietrich @burrito.space and Robin @robin.berjon.com in previous years, I think Dietrich ended up with a talk in 2025. Both years there were socials. No one has ever applied for a dev room.

I think it’s a good leap up to AtmosphereConf, and with you being “more local” it would be good.

Like all these patterns, let’s find you +1-2 other people to coordinate FOSDEM 2027 presence. Keeping an eye on devroom applications would be the next deadline.

Hello, I am ready to help organize the event through the @atproto.fr account.

October 4th is the deadline for developer room proposals:

I suggest that we use the list of previous talks related to AT Protocol that took place at FOSDEM 2026 as an argument to demonstrate that the theme aligns naturally with the conference spirit and can attract enough speakers for this year:

It would be great to contact the Fediverse organizers who managed last year’s Social Web room and ask if they are interested in organizing it again and would allow us to include some talks.

Hi! Viivi from Tangled here; happy to step up to co-manage if you’re still in need of another one!

+1 to @edouard.paris, especially since the linked talks were scattered across three different rooms. Seems like a fair case to make for an atproto room to me.

I got no experience in this sort of thing and I’m low on bandwidth atm, but, being a brusseleir, I’m happy to help if I can

Yeah, I (Alex G not Alex B ) was at FOSDEM this year, it was a very good opportunity to connect with European atproto developers who are just out of university or otherwise unlikely to travel to North American events. Our plans for a European Atmosphere Conference in 2027 will likely meet that requirement anyhow, but it’s a fun and worthwhile endeavor for sure.

In 2026 they put atproto talks together in a room with Matrix and IPFS as a sort of miscellaneous decentralized messaging track, because FOSDEM is the largest annual event for ActivityPub and they have a dedicated room.

We are all Alex

Sorry!

Great to see so many people interested in helping out with this! I’ll manage coordinating this from the co-op side and make sure this happens and to connect everyone.

The direction I’d propose is to go for a dedicated atproto devroom, not scattered talks.

Why: atproto is a protocol, not a company or a single app, with a growing pile of apps on it, and it’s foundational enough to carry a room on its own. As @viivi.rocks already mentioned: in 2026 "our” talks got split across 3 rooms. So let’s fix that.

Yes we could try the combined approach (or maybe do both?), but I do think that makes the call for a single room weaker.

If anyone thinks that’s too ambitious for a first attempt (and maybe has some insights on how rooms are chosen?) say so now: that’s the call we need to make before Oct 4.

People

FOSDEM wants at least 2 named devroom managers. Going by who’s volunteered:

  • @edouard.paris + @viivi.rocks as the two managers, if you’re both up for it? You’ve both offered and already done the homework. Confirm and you’re it.
  • @pixeline.be, you’re local in Brussels, super useful for on-the-ground stuff and the evening social event (pre or post fosdem). Ok to map you there? Could do a general atproto-meetup with both people going to fosdem and any outsiders.
  • @alex.bsky.team, does Bluesky want an official role, speaker and/or sponsor? Good to know early either way.

Timeline

Before Oct 4

  1. Pull the proposal together: theme + the 2 managers + the demand evidence (Edouard’s list of 2026 atproto talks is exactly the “there’s clearly demand for this” argument) +
pick a day (Sat or Sun, full or half day).
  2. Reach out to the Fediverse “Social Web” room organizers, as a courtesy and a backup (if we know who they are in the first place?). Not to share our application with them or folding into their room. Just keeping a friendly parallel line open in case our proposal doesn’t make it.
  3. Confirm the roles above.

04 Oct

  • devroom proposal deadline.

20 Oct

  • accepted rooms announced.

27 Oct

  • issue our own CfP
  • promote/market CfP through all our channels: ATmosphereConf newsletter + every organizer’s personal Bluesky repost + a Bluesky-team amplification via Alex + local (NL/BE/DE/UK) atproto meetup groups

07 Dec

  • publish the schedule.

30 & 31 January (Sat + Sun)

  • FOSDEM event

@edouard.paris + @viivi.rocks: could you setup a shared docs space (or maybe just a wiki post on this forum) where we can collab on the application text?

Does anyone object to going for our own room instead of scattering into existing ones?

Hey @gui.do ! This timeline sounds great, thanks for your work on putting this together. We’re going to have some focused discussions internally next week and will get back to you after that — it’s likely we’ll want a presence there and can work together on a devroom proposal at a minimum.

thanks for the timeline!
I’m confirming my availability for helping setup an evening social event. Never been to fosdem before but if you folks let me know what a Fosdem evening social event should look and feel like, I’ll give it a shot! My first question : Is it offside to the FOSDEM or part of it (like, does the Fosdem provide a space + stuff for it or should I set it up entirely)?

Friday before the event @robin.berjon.com organized an event, but I was not able to join. Maybe he can give us indsights about the place they went to.

Saturday, there were more than 8,000 attendees, so at the end of the day, they spread across the city for social gatherings. My friends and I did not sign up for the Tailscale-organized one, where I heard most of the atproto people went. Instead, we went to a random pub, and someone at the entrance asked us if we came from the FOSDEM venue. Then, they gave us bracelets, and GitButler sponsored our beers inside.

I modified the settings of matrix.atproto.fr to federate with the fosdem.org server. Now, anybody can join a FOSDEM room through the atproto Matrix server using atproto OIDC. It is not useful right now, but it can become useful later, as each physical room has a dedicated Matrix room.

oh that’s nice! Was Matrix the main community/communication tool used at FOSDEM amongst participants or was it more for organizers?

It is for everyone: FOSDEM 2026 - Contact and it’s the only tool advertised, but most people are talking in their own community chat spaces (discord, signal, Whatsapp,…).

There is a mailing list (and an archive) to help you get in touch with other FOSDEM visitors.

You may also join us for a chat at any time in the #fosdem:fosdem.org matrix room.

During the event, you can join real-time discussions and watch talks live on matrix! See the matrix space at #fosdem-space:fosdem.org. Don’t have a matrix account yet? Create one for free at chat.fosdem.org.
