Do you have OPINIONS about algorithmic feeds?

Do you have OPINIONS about algorithmic feeds in BSky? We’re building them, as part of the open source GreenEarth project, and we want them to be awesome. Do you most wish you had controls, transparency, optimization for something other than engagement, diversity (what kind?), something else?

I’d love to have a 15 minute call with any BlueSky user who’d like to talk to me about this.

Book me directly here: Calendly

Or message me here, on BlueSky, or email jonathanstray@berkeley.edu

Hey @jonathanstray.bsky.social welcome! I can boost this with the atmosphere community account.

I think that open ended feedback is often very hard including needing to reach out cold.

Have you considered a form with follow up?

My feedback is that I’d love regional feeds - a feed that had lots of info about my city and even neighborhoods would be awesome.

you can have the best algorithms but if there is a lack of content or the right type of content then the algorithm can only do so much.

we need more content by humans for humans, we need more people who create and choose to create content on Bluesky and/or other atproto apps.

Sherif from Eurosky said during public spaces conference that we need more culture on atproto, and I 100% agree. We need musicians, artists and creators of all kinds to choose atproto apps as the default app that they want to publish their content on.

I’d love to chat about this! Glad to hear you’re trying the just tell it what you want in words thing I’ve been wishing for.

I’ve been wishing for some other things as well. One wish we should talk about: train to optimize, instead of reflexive evaluations (eg likes, the norm) retrospective evaluations, for instance: if I were reviewing my likes a month later, would I still be glad that I had seen this post. Or, this is probably better since you could potentially get training data for this already: Would I still like this recommendation if there had been a lot of discussion about it and I had read that discussion, ie, would this post hold up under scrutiny.

Hi! Thanks I would love a boost. We have a survey coming where there will be a form, but at the moment I am trying to find people who will have an actual conversation with me. I guess I could make a form for that too. What do you think?

Thanks for the regional feeds idea! Challenging to do since profiles don’t include a location…

I totally agree! And we’ve been thinking about ways to identify and boost creators.
