I’d like to help build a developer outreach group for atproto. Folks who deliver high quality open source contributions to projects that would genuinely benefit from Atmospheric social features, atproto interoperability (or even just “Log in with Atmosphere†”).
I’d propose that the members of ATproto Maker Outreach (eh?! ) would:
Seek, accept suggestions for & track open source projects which might benefit from atproto integration
Assess the right work to offer each project as a group, and how best to offer it
Find & coordinate volunteers to complete the work. We’d:
Keep the work small, self-contained and easy to review
Collaborate internally to review the work before submitting it to the owners (this would be a great place for atproto learners!)
Hold ourselves to the Human Responsible AI contribution policy (but hand-write, or move on, if the maintainers in question would prefer that)
Offer our collective expertise on going deeper into atproto land, if the maintainers want it
Contribute to (build?) the atproto community’s ‘best practices’ guides, and champion them
Be kind, respectful and human at all points; make friends & have fun
† I think we’d be best to wait until the “Log in with Atmosphere” working group has guidance before we start the outreach part, but we could plan & prepare in the meanwhile. (@bmann.ca, did you have insight on how that’s going?)
My questions to you all:
Any thoughts/concerns? //?
Is this a new working group, or a wing of an existing one?
Yes it’s a working group! We’re in the midst of having the co-op be available and we’re going to use the concept of circles and working groups a little interchangeably.
@brittanyellich.com has been using the atprotocol .dev account for a few working group meetings but otherwise there hasn’t been a kick off of more work. The domain is generally available.
I’d suggest moving the account to a delegation capable PDS to share it with several people.
The previous discussions that are related is the Community Tech Speaker program that was run at Mozilla - a bottoms up growth of dev speakers and evangelists, multi lingual content and support for individuals in their home region
Other than that - the basics! Gather links and getting started, focus on dev centric content, make a welcoming space for newcomers - both online and in person.
Rebooting chat might be in scope here too.
My recommendation is always 2-3 coleads (so you should find at least one other person to join you)+ a larger pool of supporters - so up to you to figure that out.
I don’t have anything larger to announce yet but can support with fiscal hosting and small dollar purchases (stickers!). We could also work together to scope needs and go out to raise sponsorship funding for specific things.
The LwA team has done about 6 weeks of user research and interviews and I’m sure would love more support in release and adoption cc @kandake.africa
Love it (so long as no-one’ll get confused with some kind of Atmo(sphere) Co(mpany)
Thank you for all the advice above! I’ll keep an eye out for others who might be interested, try to get some folks interested in leading and contributing to say so here & generally put together some of the stuff we might use (IRL be useful whether we get the folks to form the working group or not!)
Super! Would that be as a contributor, or are you offering to help lead the working group instead/as well?
Either way it’ll be fair few days while we look for interest & other replies from folks. And your post is interesting too! I’ll have a proper read tomorrow (after I get my baby-care night off )
I’m sure I’m not qualified for leadership but I’m highly interested in making the world a safer place and I intend to finish an informal protocol for various identity confidence systems. Take care of baby!
