Universal profiles on the open social web

Figured I’d chip in with some thoughts on this after a discussion with @nel.pet about this topic. My project, https://colibri.social, has a prototype implementation for an idea of a global profile they proposed.

It goes like this: When you first sign into Colibri, we check if you have a Bluesky profile. If you do, we give you the option to either base your Colibri profile on that Bluesky profile (and optionally keep it in sync), or create an entirely new profile from scratch. This implementation could easily be replaced with a “global profile”, maybe hosted under lexicon.community, that defines a few basic fields. I propose:

  • picture
  • banner
  • name
  • bio
  • pronouns
  • arbitrary amount of links?
  • theming data similar to standard.site?

Apps can then choose which of these to use! They can also sync the entire profile, or override individual fields, with the other ones staying in sync. For example, I think I want my profile picture and pronouns to be the same across all platforms, but Sifa should probably have a different bio than my Colibri or Bluesky profiles.
