Introducing the Modal Foundation

Hi Everyone! We’re excited to share that we’ve fulfilled the Free Our Feeds commitment to launch a public interest tech foundation. The Modal Foundation is a new nonprofit dedicated to making open social tech viable at scale. Modal works to support decentralized tech that helps people create, circulate and discover trustworthy information.

The foundation oversees the Free Our Feeds Campaign, Eurosky and more initiatives to come.

What we have planned

Our initial focus is on four pillars:

  • Technology: We build and provide access to decentralized tech components, beginning with the AT Protocol. We’re starting with Eurosky to build * the foundations for ATProto development in Europe.

  • Funding: We work with mission-aligned and market-based funding streams for tech development, research, governance and community participation.

  • Knowledge: We support protocol development and governance, policy, independent research, developer community knowledge, and public information.

  • Participation: We collaborate with communities, organizations and content producers to drive robust demand for open social tech.

Ha ha, so much. Thanks all, for sure will be engaging here. At the moment am deep in the basics of setting up operations, plotting priorities, raising funds, and having as many conversations as we can manage. Back here ASAP with thoughts.

Modal highlights of last few months:

Hey thanks you, Good to keep on overview of the journey.

Had a look around Roomy. pretty cool. Give me a chance to get orientated. (Warning. Very slowly). Our biggest slowdown at the moment is having the blueskies, euroskies, blackskies and (yes) wsocials, etc form up an association of PDS operators.
So far their common factor is the PLC Directory. http started the same way. Next step is finding what the endpoints, the ones the directory points at, have in common, and how they interoperate.

p.s. It’s going to be so funny to watch the wsocial guys do a Homer Simpson “doh”.
